Key Notes from the SAS Forum UK 2017

Amadeus Consulting Manager Elena Presenting on Auditing in SAS Visual Analytics v1.2

This year’s SAS Forum UK saw approaching 700 SAS users from across the UK come together for the two-day event.

The forum provided opportunities for attendees to engage in industry discussions, complete certifications, attend workshops and focus groups and hear from keynote speakers from Sky and SAS Institute. As sponsors of this year’s Forum, Amadeus hosted a stand, and it was a fantastic opportunity to meet and discuss the current industry with our fellow SAS experts. If you had the chance to call by, you will have seen In.Form, Amadeus Software’s codeless solution for replacing SAS/AF and data capture applications.

Charles Senabulya, SAS UK, summarised a common misunderstanding about SAS – that because it is the founding product in analytics, it doesn’t do modern analytical methods.  Of course, this isn’t true and it was SAS that first brought many analytical methods to mainstream use, so your GLM’s, to Neural Nets, to Machine Learning and AI, absolutely – SAS does it right out of the box.  Sometimes this is forgotten and perhaps we need to shout about it more.

Chris Hemedinger, SAS Institute, described how the has become a hive of knowledge, supplied by well over 100,000 SAS users, including a handful of avid superusers.  This website provides input from industry peers with first-hand experience of real world problem solving, in addition to contributions from those who actually write the software and understand what is happening under the covers.  The analytics economy was underlined by Fritz Lehman, SAS Institute, as to just how many everyday decisions we take for granted that are now dependent on analytics.

Attendees may also have been present at the presentations of two Amadeus Consultants, Elena Muriel and Tamas Bosznay, speaking on implementing and auditing SAS® Visual Analytics, and using SAS® Text Miner and SAS® Visual Analytics to conduct sentiment analysis respectively.

Finally, SAS® Viya 3.3 was showcased. We at Amadeus are very excited about this release, scheduled for end of November, and the growing number of customers adopting SAS Viya alongside SAS 9.4.  Detail was shared on the contents of the maintenance update to SAS 9.4, available as of 22nd September 2017.  Maintenance 5, i.e. SAS 9.4 (TS1M5), provides more updates than other SAS 9.4 maintenance updates.
