AI in the Analytics Industry: Takeaways from SAS Forum UK
Last week, several Amadeus colleagues undertook their annual pilgrimage to the SAS Forum UK. This event provides opportunities to discuss, share, learn and teach amongst crowds of likeminded SAS users and industry experts. This year’s Forum, centred around AI and its place in the modern business world, proved valuable, and we’ve amassed some of our key takeaways below:
Exponential growth of Big Data
There is no doubting that the amount of data we create is growing at rapid rates and the information we share with organisations is also growing, whether we knowingly share that information or not. Without it, organisations will struggle to access the knowledge or understanding they need to succeed in the marketplace. Historically, data was seen as a differentiator. These days, it’s taken more of the role of disruptor, and is proving critical to the ongoing transformation of modern industries.
World of data shift
There has been a notable shift in the way data is used by organisations, with a shift from “a world of data” to a “world of intelligence”. After all, without trying to understand the data you hold and conduct effective data modelling to access accurate forecasting for the future, what value can it bring you?
SAS software updates
There are a range of updates in the pipeline to expand SAS software functionality and ensure it remains ahead of the curve within the industry - this includes SAS® Viya® 3.4 for Windows and Linux. Other updates include further embracing the opportunities presented by AI and developing a question and answer facility within SAS Visual Analytics.
What is the future of AI?
There’s no doubt that AI has already generated significant changes. A current concern amongst many is the fear of job losses as historically human-led processes are being taken over by machines. However, the overriding message from a Q&A with experts and industry leaders was that, whilst the nature of jobs may evolve as organisations seek to become increasingly data-driven, the number of jobs should not diminish. The experts encouraged SAS users to embrace the opportunities opened up to them by AI and not to be afraid of the changes it could bring.

SAS and Python: The Perfect Partners in Crime – Amadeus presentation
Despite taking the last slot of the event, Amadeus Consultant Carrie drew impressive numbers to her presentation, “SAS and Python: The Perfect Partners in Crime”. There was significant interest in the topic, with many keen to understand more about the uses and benefits of open-source and interactions with SAS.
